The uprising begins.

The uprising began as enslaved people spontaneously started to revolt. Soon slaves from other plantations joined, and they quickly numbered in the thousands. After a bit of hesitation, Toussaint Louverture joined in and created a properly trained army to augment the untrained members of the slave rebellion and the ragtag militias. In addition to traditional tatics, they were trained in guerrilla warfare.

France and Spain go to war.

Toussaint initially sides with the Spanish to get their help, but when France ends slavery he travels to France to pitch for their support. They agree and Toussaint quickly turns on the Spanish, forcing them out.

Independence!

After much war, struggle, and bloodshed, Haiti declares independence and decides to establish a republic under the name of Haiti. It is the first Black republic, and the second independent nation in the Western Hemisphere, after the United States of America.

Toussaint Louverture

Toussaint Louverture is often considered the hero of the Haitian Revolution, and he is an interesting character. Initially, he was not in favor of supporting the rebellion but quickly came on board. He saw the people rebelling and their lack of training, tactical skill, and organization. In response, he created his own army to enhance the existing forces. He is widely considered an excellent general and a very skilled tactician. Some people even consider him the George Washington of the Haitian Revolution. Though I would say, he was far superior. While he was not an instigator of the revolt, he was a major part of its success.
